EVERY TRAILRUNNER WILL TELL YOU, THEY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT GEAR, THE ONLY POINT OF CONTACT BETWEEN YOU AND THE GROUND.

Choosing your next pair of trailrunning shoes can easily be compared to choosing a life partner. Every trailrunner will tell you, they are the most important gear, the only point of contact between you and the ground. Your shoes are an important point of impact so comfort is not an option, but it also need to be dynamic to answer each changeset of direction within your stroll. What are the main criteria’s ? What distance are you running ? On which kind of playground ?

THOUSANDS OF MILES OF RAIDLIGHT TRAIL RUNNING EXPERIENCE COMBINED WITH DECADES OF MONTEBELLUNA FOOTWEAR EXPERIENCE

At RaidLight we asked ourselves all of those questions, and that’s where began a 2 years project to develop 4 different models, adapted for different practices, playground and trailrunner’s habits.

ENGINEERED IN ITALY, TESTED IN THE ALPS

As a part of the Rossignol group we were able to use Montebelluna’s factory, located one hour away from the Dolomites mountains. It is known as the hometown of footwear engineering, lots of R&D centers are located there (Nike, Diadora …). We were able to use Lange’s (ROSSIGNOL/LANGE) (ski boots + link) facilities and high technology tools to develop our footwear collection.

In order to find the best materials, shoes were tested in the R&D center : Abrasion test, Martindale test and traction test. Those are the most important phase within the development process as it allows the team to study each part and characteristic of the shoes: from the last to the upper, the breathability, dynamism, traction capacity … This process brings a greater technicality to all our soles, with a high level of grip and durability.

Understanding trail runners’ needs was possible thanks to each one’s participation but also 3D scans within our facilities to analyze thousands of feet and find the perfect last.

For this collection, four different prototypes were developed and tested by our Team RaidLight members and pro trailrunners such as Nathalie Mauclair and Christophe le Saux.

STEPS OF CREATION:

1. First our team worked on the last. It can be described as the DNA of the shoes as it defines the shape and fit of your model (the revolutiv has a regular feet and is focused on precision to improve the versatility on different kind of trails versus the Ultra that has a more relaxed fit with a wide shape to improve comfort during long distances)

2. The second step is to develop the mold for the Midsole and outsole. It can be either injected EVA (on our Responsiv Ultra) or compressed (as it is on our other models). Starting from a resin paste we developed our own mold through a technician’s drawing.

3. Sensor 3 technology: Concept developed by the Rossignol Group to improve foot support and comfort. The Sensor 3 technology is a footbed of variable densities. 3 zones of increased shock absorption help the support of the foot. This transfers to a gain in energy and increased comfort during use. This technology is available in 3 different models which answer all runner’s requirements : dynamic, fast, light and comfortable.

4. There is a tailor team that is dedicated to the development of the upper part of our footwear collection. Materials are chosen thanks to their expertise and our partner’s experience, allowing us to design and develop different upper according to people’s use and needs.

HERE THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TESTS:

Once everything is ready, all those pieces of information are sent to our partners in order to develop different mold (one per size) and it is time for the first prototypes that are going to be adjusted following the test’s reviews.

Lab testing

In Lab testing, our team is mainly looking at flexion and signs of wear on the midsole and outsole by hitting and cooling the shoes to see how it reacts but also moving the shoes hundreds of thousand of time and see how it reacts. The priority is to look at the grip, dynamism and durability.

Field testing

Thanks to field testing we are able to see how it fits, how the shoe is reacting to the environment, types of terrains… In total, more than 50 trail runners from every level and running habits tested the collection.

ADJUSTMENTS BEFORE LAUNCHING

After those tests there is a phase of adjustment before launching the production that is usually taking around 3 months before being ready. After two years of development and hard work, RaidLight designed four different models, for different practices and trailrunners.
